Luc Besson wrote and directed The Big Blue. Luc Besson wrote and directed Nikita. Luc Besson wrote and directed Léon. Luc Besson wrote and directed Lucy. Oh, how the mighty have fallen.
The early elements of Lucy suggest a hyper-cool pan-European crime thriller starring Scarlett Johansson. Sign me up, I'd watch that. But from that welcome self-homage of the sleek early Besson films, Lucy implodes.
Confused, preposterous and, at times, pompous, Lucy evolves into a psychedelic, pseudo-intellectual science-fiction car crash of a film. The plot manages to make The Matrix Revolutions seem coherent.
Lucy only receives a double-digit review because there is a car chase through the streets of Paris. If nothing else, Luc Besson still knows how to stage a decent car chase.
