The boys are back in town. And once again, neither Inspector Jack Cates (Nick Nolte) nor Reggie Hammond (Eddie Murphy) are overly enamoured by the prospect of spending time together. Over the course of 48 hours the duo bicker, bitch and jostle for alpha male supremacy. Reggie gets to roust a redneck bar and screech 'Roxanne' one more time. Sound familiar?
The difference is, this time around the dynamism isn't quite there. The chemistry between the two characters established in 48 Hrs, feels more forced in Another 48 Hrs. The dialogue is stale, nowhere near as fresh as the original outing.
There is a ridiculously implausible and crudely constructed storyline centred on 'The Iceman' - a shadowy, anonymous criminal mastermind - which only serves to place the two main characters into this overly familiar routine.
Sadly, Another 48 Hrs comes across as a transparent attempt by Paramount Studios to cash in on the popularity of 48 Hrs. But even a winning combination needs direction, and a believable plot. This underwhelming sequel demonstrates that you cannot solely rely on a greatest hits compilation second time around.
