From Antoine Fuqua, the director of The Replacement Killers, Training Day and Tears Of The Sun, Shooter is a solid, if unspectacular, addition to a back catalogue that now includes Brooklyn's Finest, Olympus Has Fallen and The Equalizer.
Based on the novel, Point of Impact by Stephen Hunter, Mark Wahlberg stars as retired Marine sniper, Bob Lee Swagger. Reluctantly recruited to prevent an anticipated assassination attempt on the US President, Swagger is quickly embroiled in an elaborate conspiracy plot.
Entertaining for the most part, the film is well-paced, particularly to begin with, including several impressive action sequences. Shooter benefits greatly from the casting of the ever-appealing Wahlberg in the lead role. Even when Swagger's vengeful moral conscience is exposed, Wahlberg manages to create a character the audience can readily empathise with.
