In my opinion, Guardians Of The Galaxy. Vol 2 suffers from the number one problem that plagues most sequels. When the original is fresh, novel and innovative, how do you follow it up? For every Iron Man, there's an Iron Man 2.
There is little to redeem Guardians Of The Galaxy: Vol 2. Perhaps, the introduction of the sweet-natured Mantis (Pom Klementieff), or the continued character arc of Gamora and Nebula? Zoe Saldaña conveys a vulnerability in Gamora absent from Guardians Of The Galaxy, but again, Karen Gillan adds further depth to Nebula, particularly with a powerful speech laden with searing hurt and anguish,
"As a child, my father would have Gamora and me battle one another in training. Every time my sister prevailed, my father would replace a piece of me with machinery, claiming he wanted me to be her equal. But she won. Again and again, and again, never once refraining. So after I murder my sister, I will buy a warship with every conceivable instrument of death. I will hunt my father like a dog, and I will tear him apart slowly - piece by piece - until he knows some semblance of the profound and unceasing pain I knew every single day."
Despite these fleeting highlights, Guardians Of The Galaxy: Vol 2 appears disjointed and disconnected. A slender plot is exposed further by a turgid pace and a stop-start storyline, which isn't helped by the decision to split the group for large parts of the film. Only then do you realise that the strength of certain characters is in the chemistry and interplay with others. As a result, Guardians Of The Galaxy: Vol 2 fails to recapture the magic of Guardians Of The Galaxy.
