Review.

Ten years after Ruben Fleischer's vibrant, inventive and self-aware debut feature, Zombieland, the make-shift dysfunctional family grouping of Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg), Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson), Wichita (Emma Stone) and Little Rock (Abigail Breslin) return to our screen. The main protagonists’ return to reprise their roles in Zombieland: Double Tap is by far, hands down, the best part of the sequel.

Following three uninspiring and lacklustre films - namely, 30 Minutes Or Less, Gangster Squad and Venom - director Ruben Fleischer teams up once again with Zombieland writers, Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese. However, where Fleischer, Wernick and Reese worked hard to make the original quartet interesting and likeable, iZombieland: Double Tap the new characters aren’t as developed. Take, for example, the most substantial new addition to the cast - Zoey Deutch’s Madison, a relentlessly effervescent, stereotypical Valley girl in a hot pink Juicy Couture terrycloth sweatsuit - who isn’t afforded a single ounce of depth, and rendered a caricature in every possible way. Worse still, Madison is subjected to some horribly mean-spirited treatment by the characters ‘…whose ultimate survival you became wholly invested in’ in Zombieland.

Throughout, Fleischer keeps the film running at a brisk pace. Even when the film meanders through some secondary, side plots, the film seldom feels sluggish. But, little feels fresh or surprising. Zombieland: Double Tap is more of a celebration of its own existence, than anything terribly novel. Perhaps Zombieland: Double Tap is not a film to be taken too seriously? Instead, sit back and enjoy the familiar aspects and call backs to the original.
