Review.

Ang Lee's Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is a sweeping romantic epic set in China in the early 19th Century. In the hands of acclaimed cinematographer Peter Pau, breathtaking scenery cloaks the film in an aura of calm, tranquillity. The lush visuals are complemented by a spectacular array of costumes, from Master Li Mu Bai's (Chow Yun-Fat) austere, almost monk-like attire to the sumptuous and beautiful wardrobe of Governor Yu's daughter, Jen (Ziyi Zhang).

Amidst a tale of unattainable love and the bond between master and student Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is punctuated by several jaw-dropping fight sequences. These sequences were choreographed by acclaimed martial arts choreographer Yuen Woo Ping, who came to prominence to western audiences in The Matrix, one year earlier. The fast-and-fluid hand-to-hand combat sequences, particularly between the two female leads (Michelle Yeoh and Ziyi Zhang) are a work of art. Pure poetry. Pure ballet. Pure beauty.

Michelle Yeoh's subtle portrayal of Yu Shu Lien is mesmerising. Her performance allows for a glimpse of the tender, unspoken bond between Yu Shu Lien and Li Mu Bai, but tragically she is burdened by duty, regret and missed opportunities. The nuances of emotion are heartbreaking to watch.

The subdued ending leaves much to the audience's interpretation. Does Jen, driven by an insatiable desire for self-expression, finally enjoy the freedom she craves?
