Review.

Loosely based on a MTV cartoon series that ran for three seasons between 1991 and 1995, Aeon Flux is symptomatic of science fiction films of the early 2000s. Namely, this stylish, high-concept, science fiction film tried too hard to recreate the appealing elements of The Matrix trilogy. It is 2415, and a dystopian future of Earth sees the authoritarian police state challenged by an underground resistance movement with a flair for martial arts. Sound familiar?

The result, Aeon Flux is insipid, incoherent and instantly forgettable. Which is a shame, as much was expected of director Karyn Kusama following her debut feature, Girlfight, which won the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival, 2000. Aeon Flux, Kusama's second film, did not match the promise of Girlfight.

And whilst Charlize Theron has demonstrated that she is more than competent in an action role (Prometheus, Mad Max: Fury Road, Atomic Blonde) her characterisation of Aeon Flux is sterile, lifeless and unengaging.
