Review.

Whilst Sergio Leone undoubtedly defined a genre, there is more to the Spaghetti Western than the 'Dollars' trilogy - A Fistful Of Dollars, For A Few Dollars More and The Good, The Bad And The Ugly. Released a couple of months after For A Few Dollars More, Sergio Corbucci's Django is one such example.

Upon its release, the film earned a reputation as one of the most brutal and violent films ever made, and was subsequently refused certification in the United Kingdom by the British Board of Film Classification until 1993.

Borrowing heavily from the plot of Sergio Leone's A Fistful Of Dollars, which itself borrowed heavily from Akira Kurasawa's Yojimbo, Sergio Corbucci's film offers a more nihilistic slant on the now familiar story. A mysterious lone gunslinger, the titular Django (Franco Nero) rides into town and plays two rival factors off against each other. Franco Nero is every bit as charismatic as Clint Eastwood, and Django is every bit as amoral as Eastwood's antihero.

Corbucci ensures Django is relentlessly paced, and despite the short run time (and meagre budget) packed full of soundly staged shoot-outs and action set pieces.

Quentin Tarantino was taken by the Spaghetti Westerns of the 1960s and 1970s, including Django, and released his own homage to the genre, Django Unchained in 2012.
