He's back. Tyler Rake is back. Nine months after being judged 'clinically dead' Tyler Rake is back doing what he does best.
Chris Hemsworth reprises the role of the Australian black ops mercenary and Sam Hargrave returns as the director in this bigger, bolder sequel. Even the infamous 12-minute one-shot is surpassed by one that exceeds 20 minutes in length. The scene starts with an intense, unrelenting prison break followed by a spectacular car chase and train escape through the Georgian countryside.
But for all this laudable ambition, Extraction 2 is no better than Extraction.
Team members Nik (Golshifteh Farahani) and her brother Yaz (Adam Best) are given welcome expansion to supporting roles. And there is a further attempt at character development, as we witness Tyler Rake dealing with and processing the all-consuming guilt of the death of his son. Rakes' past becomes even more crucial in the sequel, as does his search for his continued redemption. Yet as much as Joe Russo's script tries to add thematic substance and an emotional core to the character, these moments are never as engaging as the high-octane action scenes. Nonetheless, Hemsworth remains eminently watchable - a compelling screen presence with natural charm and surprisingly effective comedic timing.
The cameo from Idris Elba's shadowy unnamed character would suggest a third instalment in the series. Sam Hargrave and Chris Hemsworth confirmed as much at Netflix's TUDUM event in Brazil, on 17 June 2023.
