Review.

Six years after the lacklustre Mission: Impossible IIMission: Impossible III returned - and this time, reignited the spirit of the original television series. No longer would this be one man show. Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) has assembled a team - featuring the returning Luther Stickel (Ving Rhames), Zhen (Maggie Q) and Declan Gormley (Jonathan Rhys Myers) - and each member now plays an integral role in just about every action scene.

Equally, the film benefits from a truly memorable screen villain. Apparently without remorse, Philip Seymour Hoffman's portrayal of the arms dealer, Owen Davian is chilling.

Mission: Impossible III certainly contains some impressive action sequences. In particular, the middle section of the film where the four-strong IMF team break-in to the Vatican hints at how good the franchise could be. Fresh from the US television series, Alias, J.J. Abrams replaced John Woo, and the first-time director would appear to be in his element with the intricate set piece that features a breathtakingly beautiful tangerine Lamborghini, only rivalled by the sultry Maggie Q in that dress.

This is by far the most edge-of-your-seat viewing of the three films to date, but some of the tension that was built up early on dissipates in the final third.

In an already crowded marketplace, featuring Jason Bourne [The Bourne Identity (2002) and The Bourne Supremacy (2004)] and James Bond [Mission: Impossible III was released six months ahead of Daniel Craig's first appearance as James Bond, Casino Royale] Mission: Impossible III would suggest there is room for Ethan Hunt.
