Review.

Mission: Impossible - Fallout picks up two years after the events of Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation. Solomon Lane (Sean Harris) has been imprisoned, yet The Syndicate remains active through a radical faction known as The Apostles. Directed by an unknown individual known only by the alias John Lark, The Apostles plan to acquire enough plutonium to create three nuclear bombs that will, when launched, herald a new world order. Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his IMF team are tasked with obtaining the plutonium before The Apostles.

Christopher McQuarrie, the director of Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation returns to direct Mission: Impossible - Fallout, the first time anyone has returned to direct a second film. Between both films, McQuarrie wrote the screenplay for The Mummy [also starring Tom Cruise] and it easy to see how the screenwriter-turned-director has developed as a technical filmmaker in the intervening three years. McQuarrie is evidently more confident, allowing tension to develop slowly and steadily.

The strength of Mission: Impossible - Fallout is the action. Relentless. The prisoner extraction set in the streets of Paris is technically superb. Shot with an expert sense of timing, Christopher McQuarrie creates a thrilling spectacle to rival any car chase seen previously in the French capital, John Frankenheimer's Ronin and Luc Besson's Lucy immediately spring to mind.

Ethan Hunt may not be the most complex character in cinema history. As a result, Tom Cruise has never really been required to bring any emotional depth to any of the films. But Christopher McQuarrie valiantly attempts to define the character a little in Mission: Impossible - Fallout by revisiting his historic relationship with Julia Meade (Michelle Monaghan) and developing relationship with Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson). If nothing else, it allows Hunt to be portrayed as an individual, someone with strengths, weaknesses, and a driving set of beliefs.

After more than 20 years, and six films, the film franchise has now run longer than Bruce Geller's original television series that aired on CBS in the 1960s and 1970s [although the television series did run for seven seasons, 171 episodes]. Mission: Impossible - Fallout is undoubtedly the strongest film in the franchise to date. Cruise's passion for performing his own stunts and finding novel means to test his skills as a physical performer keep the franchise alive and for now, keep the audience coming back for more.
